SkillsTx strives to provide skill inventory self-assessments and functionality that encourages people to self determine their own skills with honesty. Our self-assessment tutorials are designed to provide an understanding of why authenticity is important. We also encourage organisations to provide their own awareness communication that is relevant to the organisational reasons for "Why are we doing this". All this is designed to limit the need for the "old school" of having to validate people's skill profiles as standard procedure.

We really do believe that the best people to capture their own skills are the people themselves. Given the right messages, we have found that in general the trend is towards authenticity.

In addition:

  1. We provide analytical as well as reporting functionality to highlight outliers, should there be concerns
  2. We encourage discussions, as a first cab off the rank, to bring possible outliers back to a more authentic state
  3. We provide a simple mechanism that allows managerial style tick of approval of a persons self-assessed skill profile
  4. We also provide functionality for a more stringent endorsement (sometimes referred to as SFIA validation) if such an action is ultimately found necessary.

Steps taken

  1. The first step would be to use the analytics provided to check for outliers.
    1. The Outlier Analysis analytics is looked at first:
    2. It provides a analytical narrative.
      1. Kristel Esh has been highlighted as a possible issue with a larger profile than the average.
      2. Willowdean Stam also has a high skill count, but he is actually still a Candidate for the CISO position, and so will be involved in an interview as a matter of course.
    3. The Outlier analytics backs-up the focus on Kristel Esh
    4. The Corporate report Prioritised Endorsement Targets could also have been generated as an alternative to using the Analytics:
  2.  Because EB Services has their own resident SFIA accredited person, Cherelle Couture, it was decided to make use of the Endorsement Procedures.
    1. Cherelle generated the Workbook associated with Kristel Esh's profile using Generate Workbooks under the Endorsement Procedures tasks.
    2. She then arranged an interview session with Kristel to discuss her skills and come to an agreement on what Kristel's skills profile should be
    3. Cherelle then completed the Workbook for Kristel and Approved it:
    4. The Workbook was then imported into the system using Import Workbooks under the Endorsement Procedures tasks
    5. This established an Endorsed Profile for Kristel and she was also sent an Endorsed Profile certificate

The Approved Workbook and Endorsed Profile Certificate for Kristel are available for viewing from: 2. EB Services downloads

Alternatives to a full Endorsement:

  • Kristel could have had a discussion with her Manager or other suitable person and encouraged to make changes to her own self-assessed Profile via the Planner
  • Once the changes were made there is an option for her manager, Estelle Kirby, to Approve Kristel's skill profile via Estelle's Planner.
